ACADEMICS
In the English Primary Department (EPD), we inspire our students to achieve success by challenging every child to think critically and creatively about real issues, to explore the world around them and to master academic and transferrable skills.
We place great importance on developing positive relationships and explicitly teach our children how to resolve conflicts peacefully and about the importance of taking personal responsibility.
We believe that success is achieved through more than academic learning alone, our goal is to develop well rounded global citizens who want to make a difference.

Learning
Our bespoke curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England, adapted to meet the needs and interests of our diverse student population, our German Swiss Heritage and the Hong Kong context.
Learning is organised around five cross curricular themes and each year, children engage with five ‘Big Conceptual Ideas’ within the themes.
Subject specific skills and knowledge are integrated into the cross curricular units to allow children to learn in a more relevant, challenging, and engaging context.
Subject Areas
We achieve high standards of language and literacy by designing educational experiences which will equip children with a strong command of spoken and written language, and promote their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
We aim for children to:
- Read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
- Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
- Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
- Appreciate the rich and varied literary heritage of the English language.
- Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in, and for, a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
- Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
- Become competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
