GSIS Gazette – Issue #40

5th March 2021

THIS WEEK IN IMAGES

From Principal and MD

Dear Parents and Colleagues

With the very real possibility that the ongoing restrictions on face-to-face teaching may not change in the foreseeable future, the Senior Management Team held a number of meetings today, one of which was with the Staff Representatives, to discuss how best to optimise the opportunity for learning for our students.  Please allow us some time to work through these options and we will be in touch in the coming days with an update.

Thank you for your patience, co-operation and understanding.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Best regards

Community Committee

Following the success of the recent Fasching event and online quiz the Community Committee is putting together a plan for more fun events. If you have ideas, which you would like to see or host please do get in touch at communitycommittee@gsis.edu.hk.

As well as bringing back our much loved book clubs, hiking groups and experience tours we would like to re-introduce our cooking themed events. Summer Ni (Board & Community Committee member as well as avid cook) will be kick starting our cooking sessions by teaching us all how to make the  traditional Chinese dish of steamed egg with minced pork which is a favourite amongst the whole family - young and old.

The event will be hosted online on Thursday 18th March at 6pm. We will send you a list of ingredients to buy in advance and you can cook along with Summer and enjoy the dish for a family dinner or just watch and learn how to make for a later date. Sign up via our online Google Form.

It may only be March but this is the time to get started with preparations for our famous Christmas Bazaar. We have received great feedback from many Community members on the Bazaar and to ensure that we can pull this event off we need a big team of volunteers! Please do let us know if you can help in any capacity however big or small.

English International Stream

From Head of Stream

Dear Parents

It has been wonderful to see more students attending all three phases of the school over the past two weeks and staff have been so positive and uplifted about their return. The situation is not yet ideal but we are closer to our normal than we were before Chinese New Year. Vaccines have now arrived in Hong Kong and I am sure we are all looking forward to receiving our shots so that we can collectively convince the government to reopen our schools fully.

Since the start of the year, I have had the great privilege of visiting a number of classrooms across the EIS and have been so impressed by students and teachers adapting their learning and teaching to the conditions in class. From beautiful Year 1 watercolours in response to seasonal cycles to hugely impressive Year 10 GCSE performances from the Star Wars suite, the final preparations of the IB Visual Arts Exhibition and primary students taking their first steps in multiplication. Great learning and great teaching are certainly going on throughout the school.

Last week we surveyed all the students in the ESD about their attitudes towards online learning and their sense of wellbeing. This has generated some excellent data and we had a completion rate of over 80% of all students in Years 7 to 13. I will meet with student class representatives and their Head of Year in the coming weeks to review the data and decide what we can focus on to further improve our provision.

Wellbeing Week

15th to 19th March 2021

Based on requests from our students, the emphasis of this year’s Wellbeing Week in the ESD is Moving. Doing. Being. There will be a social media detox involving participants deleting social media accounts for the week – maybe we could all delete WhatsApp for a week! We will be working closely with ImpactHK, our Global Initiatives charity for this year, and people can donate to support or sponsor the detox!

As we mentioned ‘moving’, a big thank you to Andrew Champion for the weekly Run/Walk Challenges in which we are collectively moving over 5000 kms a week! I look forward to the totals for this week and next!

24 Hour Race Against Slavery

The annual 24-Hour Race Against Slavery took place in a slightly different format last weekend, where teams of eight students ran continuously as a team for a full day and night. This is an event that a large number of our students take part in every year with the support of their parents. Two teams of students from Years 12 and 13 took part and raised nearly $47, 000. The GSIS A Team came first clocking up 758.76 km, over 200 km more than the second placed team, and the GSIS second team came third. More details to come on our social media next week. One parent said that they were ‘astonished by the sheer grit and determination of the students to push themselves to their personal limit on behalf of the team and GSIS for a very worthwhile cause’.

Student Awards

Following our invitations to take part in the Hong Kong Academy of Gifted Education and the Hong Kong Outstanding Student Award I recently invited students in Years 10 to 12 to apply for a range of categories in the SCMP’s annual Student of the Year awards. We have had a number of student successes in these award schemes over the years, which is real testament to the breadth of interests and personal qualities that our students possess. I am looking forward to receiving expressions of interest from students.

Keep on moving and have a great week ahead
