German*
German is more than just a language. It is a journey through the world of German literature, culture and aesthetics. Students learn how to express themselves orally and in writing, and how to listen and understand. They explore the diversity of the German language and literature and also develop an awareness of intercultural communication and multilingualism. In order to support all students in their German language skills, at least one school hour per week is reserved at GSIS to strengthen language skills. In addition, the classes are accompanied by a support teacher who can also work with individual students on a regular basis.
English*
All students learn English as their first foreign language and once they reach the Secondary level, they are placed into two proficiency groups - Near Native Learners and Foreign Language Learners. The goal of our English classes is to enable all students, no matter which level they are at, to communicate and act confidently in international situations. They are prepared in class for the demand of studying and learning the basics needed for further language acquisition.
Second Foreign Language: French
French can be chosen as a secondary foreign language and is taught four to five lessons per week up until K12. Students are encouraged to communicate in everyday situations by speaking and listening as well as reading non-fiction and literary texts. By the end of K12, our students will have a competence level of B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Second Foreign Language: Latin
Latin is an option for the compulsory second foreign language for Secondary students which is also taught at most schools in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Latin, students not only achieve the ability to translate Latin texts, but they also discover one of the world’s oldest languages that was fundamental to Western civilisation and culture. Students become familiar with Roman and Greek mythology, history and architecture and after five years, they will achieve the qualification 'Latinum' which is a requirement for a number of subjects at German-speaking universities.
Second Foreign Language: Mandarin
Continued from the German Primary Department, Mandarin can be chosen as their mandatory second foreign language starting in K06 in the German Secondary. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, providing students with valuable linguistic and cultural skills. Mandarin class aims to enhance students' communication abilities, as well as deepen their understanding of Chinese culture. Through interactive activities, such as speaking exercises, listening comprehension, and writing practice, students develop their language proficiency in Mandarin.

ZENTRALE KLASSENARBEITEN (ZKA) & MITTLERER SCHULABSCHLUSS (MSA)
The German Zentrale Klassenarbeiten (ZKA) are a series of standardised assessments that are an integral part of the German educational system. It is conducted annually in the subjects of German, Mathematics, and English, and serves as a means to evaluate students' knowledge and skills in these key areas. The ZKA aims to provide a consistent measurement of student performance, allowing for fair and objective evaluation across the German Schools Abroad. Additionally, the ZKA plays a crucial role in determining students' eligibility for the Mittlerer Schulabschluss (MSA), also known as the Realschule, which is an intermediate school leaving qualification. The MSA is an important milestone for students in their educational journey, as it certifies their completion of the Secondary level of education and acts as a prerequisite for further academic pursuits.
