Youth Debates (Jugend Debattiert), an initiative promoting linguistic and political education in Germany, has hosted two debate workshops at GSIS in the past school years, exposing students from both streams to the art of rhetoric and oratory expression. This year, our school took a step further, partnering with the organisation and providing a three-day train-the-trainer programme to teachers. Colleagues from other German Schools abroad in the Asia Pacific region such as Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok, and Seoul also participated.
Tim Wagner, one of the founders of Jugend Debattiert, led the training and introduced the curriculum in a hands-on and practical way. He covered key areas such as how to find good topics, explain and substantiate a point of view, address others, take stock, prepare systematically, and formulate feedback. This workshop aims to empower educators to teach Youth Debates, and more importantly, lay the foundation for an annual Youth Debates competition in Asia between the participating schools.
The annual interschool Youth Debates competition is designed to greatly enhance students’ communication skills, personality development, and understanding of the concepts of democracy. It will also provide a great opportunity for intellectual and cultural exchange, strengthening the network of the German Schools Abroad community in Asia Pacific.
