International students wishing to study in Germany should ensure they have enough time to complete all the formalities. As a rule, it may often take a year to clarify all the details.

Applications for the winter semester (generally 1 October - 31 March) should be sent to the university of choice with full supporting documentation by 15 July. The application deadline for the summer semester is 15 January.

International students wishing to be admitted to German universities must take a university qualification assessment examination (Feststellungsprüfung). Students usually attend a foundation programme for international students (Studienkolleg) before taking the assessment examination. Here you will find a list of Studienkolleg centres throughout Germany. (Link)

  • Uni-Assistant is a consortium of 93 German universities, the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Uni-assist is intended to make it easier for international students to apply to German universities and, at the same time, to make it easier for universities to select their international students. A fee is charged for processing international applications to German universities.
  • Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZAB) (Central Office for Foreign Education Systems) is the office responsible for evaluating and recognising qualifications and certificates earned outside Germany. If such a request is made by the bodies responsible, the qualifications and certificates of individual applicants will be evaluated.
