Dear School Community
As every year, students will receive their report cards at the end of the school year. Most often the reports are a confirmation of the good progress made, but sometimes it is also a reminder. It is always a very special token at the end of the school career. For me it was the first time to witness the completion of the IB and the Abitur. I was curious on how this was going to be showcased at GSIS.
The Abitur Certificate Ceremony
The Abitur Certificate Ceremony was largely organised by the graduating class themselves and was held last Saturday. The atmosphere in the Ingrid Buchholtz Hall was extremely graceful and the students' performances remarkable. Overall, I was delighted to see the respectful and connected relationship between the graduates and the teachers. The celebration in Causeway Bay afterwards was cheerful and at times very lively. It will certainly remain a lasting positive memory for all involved. - A good start into a new phase of life.
The Year 13 graduation ceremony
The Ingrid Buchholtz Hall was occupied to the maximum permitted by the current regulations. The German Consulate, the Board and myself extended our warmest congratulations to the graduates. The musical contributions were a wonderful accompaniment for the certificate presentation and the speeches of the student representatives were particularly humorous and impressive. - what remains now is to wait along with the graduates for hopefully yet another round of exceptional IB final results.
GSIS cooperates with the Consulate
It was a great honour for the GSIS to offer our premises to the German Consulate to host the closing reception for the outgoing Deputy Consul General Mr. David Schmidt. Together with the Consulate, a wonderful closing reception was organised in the library. Once again, I wish Mr David Schmidt and his family all the best.
Now we will all focus on the last few weeks and look forward to the time off afterwards. I wish you a positive mindset and stay healthy.
With best regards
Dr Dirk Bennhardt Principal |

Abitur 2022
Every year, the month of May is a very special time in the German International Stream as it is the time when the oral examinations of the final year for the German Abitur take place. This is the time of review at the end of a long school life. I am very pleased that last week ended for our eight graduates of the German Secondary Department with the successful passing of the examinations and the achievement of the associated German International Abitur (DIA). We are delighted to congratulate them.
For our, now former, students, their school days ended with the ceremonial presentation of their Abitur certificates on 21 May. This year's graduating class achieved a far above average result with an overall average of 2.0, with our year's best Sophie Vukovich (1.1) and Hilda Kong (1.3) achieving particularly outstanding results.
After many years at GSIS - for some even from Kindergarten all the way to the Abitur - our graduates are now embarking on new paths. For most of them, these will lead directly to university studies or dual vocational training.
We wish them all the very best for the future!

Dear Parents,
After a month back in school, our students have settled into their routine again. This week we have started mixing classes a bit during breaks so that the students have more time in the "active" areas.
In addition we also started with out ECA programme. If your child is staying for lunch prior to an ECA and ordering a meal from the cafeteria, please ensure that they bring their own cutlery so we are not using more plastic.
Thank you for submitting your RAT by the deadline each day, this saves us much administrative time and ensures your child is on time for class!
The book week was an exciting time and the students loved the online workshop with Antje von Stemm. Below you will find a letter from her with some further information.
Have a nice weekend.

Dear Parents
Graduation 2022
We enjoyed a wonderful celebration for our graduating Year 13 students last night. Fifty-five graduates gathered in the IB Hall with their families and staff (under full compliance with the current restrictions!) to celebrate the end of their school career. They will receive their IB results in early July and we expect they will do very well and meet the offers for a wide range of excellent universities worldwide. Please do review the institutions that have made offers to our students on our website.
We were fortunate to be joined by David Schmidt, the Deputy Consul General for the German Consulate, and Jonathan Shun Wah, Chair of the GSIS Boards. We wish David and his family a safe passage to their next posting in Lima, Peru at the end of the month and thank him for all the support he has shown GSIS over recent years.
We also look forward to the Year 6 Graduation later in June as these students prepare for the transition to ESD in August. On Wednesday evening we were joined by over 80 parents who attended an information event for parents of Year 7. Our staff and students have been spending time with Year 6 over the past few weeks and students will experience a day in secondary school soon.
Careers Day
We are looking forward to Careers Day on 7th June, an online event organised by our University Guidance Team to help students start to consider life beyond school. We are very grateful to the parents and alumni who will be hosting the different ‘tracks’.
The weather does not look great for this weekend but I hope you and your families enjoy some quality time together.
Warm regards
Simon Misso-Veness Deputy Principal / Head of English International Stream |

GL Assessments
Below is a bit of information from Mr. Davidson regarding upcoming standardized assessments for all EPD students:
Over the next two weeks, EPD students will take the yearly GL Education standardized tests in the subject areas of Mathematics, English, and Spelling. The testing will be spread out over two weeks to minimize the impact on teaching and learning. We view these tests as an objective measure of how our students are achieving in relation to their UK peers and a tool for reflective practice. These results are not used to generate your child’s report, but rather as independent corroboration of the regular evaluative measures and ongoing assessment that is occurring within the classroom by the teachers. We have taken all necessary steps to ensure that this is not “high stakes” testing or that lessons are being “taught to the test”: both cases would be counter-productive and counter-intuitive. Results will be posted to your home address (as in Veracross) during the last week of the school year.
Have a lovely weekend!

Hong Kong Battle of the Books (BOB) 2022
Battle of the books was an amazing experience for me. Although it was held online, I was still pleased that it wasn't cancelled. I love reading and was very eager to join. BOB includes lots of teamwork and is perfect for anyone who loves to read, it's fun and a great way to make new friends. [Yolanda Wong K06A]
This was my first ever Battle of the Books experience and it was extremely fun. I enjoyed reading all the books that I wouldn't have read if it wasn't for this competition. I would like to thank Aarush for coaching us, Ms Chan for organizing everything, Ms Ryu for the snacks during the competition and my teammates who made this win possible. I'm looking forward to reading more interesting books and participating next year! [Emma Ngie Y07C]
I really loved participating in the the BOB competition this year, even though it was online. It was an amazing experience and it is a terrific competition to take part in. I am really grateful for Ms Chan and Aarush and my teammates because without them we wouldn’t be able to win for the second year in a row. I hope that I can also play again next year to make it three years in a row! Also, the snacks were great *wink wink* [Vedika Agarwal Y07D]
Being my second year doing BOB, I was excited at the possibility of being able to participate again. The competition went as well as we could hope, with us having a decisive victory in the semis and a narrow one in the finals. It was really fun and I can't wait for next year's! [Michelle Zhou Y08B]
Battle of the Books this year has been a long journey that started last summer, lasted through online school, and culminated with the resumption of onsite school. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process with the team and it was extremely satisfying to win as a result of the team's exceptional hard work. [Prakhar Mishra Y09D]
This year was a great experience to coach a dedicated, hardworking team who practiced thoroughly and listened to advice, while implementing it in their game tactics. All members impressed me with their vast knowledge of the books, and as such I thoroughly enjoyed leading them to victory. A big thanks to Ms. Chan, for her help in organizing and guiding the team. P.S. Next year, I wish to see all of you eligible to participate again. [Team Coach: Aarush Garg Y10B]
It is my first year at GSIS and officially the first time I am in-charge of a BoB Team. I have witnessed the effort of our highly committed students, the growth of an amazing team and the sportsmanship demonstrated by the participating schools. The moments and experiences we shared are precious. I, too, am looking forward to meeting the new Team GSIS at BoB in 2023. [Ms. Caroline Chan, Librarian - Senior Library]

Express yourself and get connected
After the long online phase, all of us - students, teachers and parents - are back to normal school life. It is a great pleasure and fun to be back, it is something that many of you have been eagerly waiting for. You can see your friends again, are out and about again, can pursue your hobbies and learn new things. But at the same time, it can be stressful, like preparing for tests, doing homework after the sometimes long way to school in addition to leisure activities, getting up earlier and going to bed earlier, simply getting everything under one hat again. This can quickly become too much, especially after a long period of online teaching/ home office and isolation. Feelings of anxiety, stress and being overwhelmed can arise and are quite normal. It is important to recognise these feelings, take them seriously and deal with them. In this case try to find ways and possibilities to work with negative and unpleasant feelings, to express and share them and thus reduce stress and anxiety. In doing so, you will relieve yourself, take care of yourself and your mental health. When you know or find out what is good for you, it connects you with yourself but also with others when you share your experiences. This of course applies to all members of our school community, big and small. Here are a few ideas and suggestions:
If you have any further ideas or questions feel free to get in touch with us.
Have a nice weekend
