GSIS Gazette – Issue #59

17th September 2021

Dear Parents

The Gazette is intended to provide essential information to parents and secondary students.  It was introduced in August 2019 to reduce information overload and the high volume of emails which parents were receiving - a challenge we all face in this digital age.

It has been designed to be a short, snappy newsletter with organised content areas so that readers can quickly find what is of interest and relevant to them each week.  Over the past two years, we have received many positive comments about using this communication channel as a way of sharing vital information and one of the key elements of the GSIS Gazette is the regularity.  We know that many of our parents look forward to receiving it and are eager to be informed about what is happening schoolwide at GSIS, as well as hearing weekly updates from the Principal, Managing Director and other members of the Senior Management Team.

As our readers, we would like to ask for your feedback and suggestions so please help us by completing the one minute survey below.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Summer’s Dumplings

Our resident chef, Summer Ni, taught the GSIS community how to make her childhood favourite dumplings on Wednesday evening. We learned all her tips and tricks to make our dumplings extra delicious and picture perfect! The recipe is below, for those of you who would like to make these at home, along with some photos of the mouthwatering end results.

Dear Parents

Wellbeing  - Healthy Minds & Healthy Bodies

The first of our “Wellbeing Weeks” has ended, and the main emphasis was on emotions. Our Class Teachers and School Counsellors worked hand in hand with your children on how to express their feelings and on how to perceive and interpret  the feelings of others.

Equally, learning to express our emotions aligned with our cultural values while still attending to our needs and feelings can be helpful both for ourselves and our relationship with others. Why not role model this at home in a playful way to allow your child opportunities to express their feelings.

Wellbeing is not only about one's feelings but also about a healthy body and therefore this week's highlight was the Puppet Show “Healthy Snack” which the children enjoyed very much.

We strongly recommend improving eating habits at home to promote health, reduce the risk of disease, and reduce being overweight and obese. Children need to consume foods and beverages that are packed with nutrients and keep away from fast foods containing sugar and refined grains.

Library - the start of borrowing books

The children have been very excited to choose and take home their first Library book this week. Please be reminded that your child needs to return the current borrowed book to take home a new book next Library lesson.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection/Influenza-like Illness

Several Kindergartens in Hong Kong have reported an increasing number of URTI or Influenza-like illness amongst their students, and as a result, these schools had to undergo compulsory COVID-19 testing. In order to keep our students safe and healthy, we urge you to leave your child/children at home to rest if they show any symptoms of URTI or Influenza-like illness. Kindly refer to PFL Campus School Nurse, Charlotte Chan’s letter for more details.

We wish you a nice weekend and a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

Primary Corner

No news this week - we are enjoying having a typical school week!

We wish you all a relaxing weekend and, on Tuesday night, a bright Mid-Autumn Festival. Maybe you will enjoy a walk with your kids with some lanterns - which are symbolic beacons that light people's path to prosperity and good fortune - and eat some Moon cake.

On Wednesday, the students can sleep in and recover from a long night out, it is a public holiday, and school is off.

Dear Parents

Secondary Department Discovery Week 2021

Later today all students in Years 9 to 11 will receive a link to the School’s Discovery Week website that outlines the trips and activities for this year’s experiential learning programme.

Parents of students in Years 7 & 8 will receive separate emails about the trips for their year groups.

Year 7 and their teachers will be going on three day trips organised by The Hutong, an experienced educational tour company. Each class will have one experience each day and rotate through the others. The first experience is a Hike Through History around Hong Kong’s WW2 sites and students will meet some engaging characters along the way with a story to tell, during the second experience they will kayak through the mangroves of Tai Mei Tuk and the third day they will visit an urban farm (further details on the website). All students will travel as a class group as we intend these excursions will provide a valuable shared experience that will strengthen the bonds between these students.

Year 8 will also be going on class trips organised by The Hutong and their experiences will include a walk starting from the 400-year old Wu Kau Tang village and then along the coastline of Yan Chau Tong Marine park, for the next experience students will be coasteering at the edges of Clearwater Bay Country Park navigating the coastline by staying as close to the waterline as possible and the third experience will be Dialogue in the Dark, a series of experiential activities and discussions with community partners who work with and advocate for people with disabilities.

Years 9, 10 & 11 will have the choice of the following activities either in school or in Hong Kong

In-school Activities

Hong Kong Trips
ALBA Basketball The Great GSIS Bake-Off
Chinese Handicrafts Horse-riding at Lo Wu Saddle Club
CSI Forensics Kitesurfing
Debating & Public Speaking PADI Scuba Diving
GSIS Make@Thon Sailing at Middle Island
Painting & Printing Exploring the Lantau Trails
Sewing & Batik Wakeboarding
Video Editting Wild Wonder Walks on Lamma
Woodwork

We hope there is something for everybody.

Preferences will be recorded on SchoolsBuddy, which will remain open until 10 am on Tuesday 21st September.

If anyone has a question please contact me directly smisso-veness@gsis.edu.hk

Have a great week!
