GSIS Gazette – Issue #45

23rd April 2021

Dear Members of the School Community

Over the past 2 weeks, I have closely monitored the media and the many ongoing affairs. These include the battle for the Chancellorship in Germany, the increasing incidence figures in Germany, a new virus mutant also appearing in Hong Kong, the complicated travel restrictions and quarantine regulations enacted everywhere, the increasing number of people being admitted into Intensive Care Units in Canada and many other countries, etc.

The above could invite a rather pessimistic attitude, resignation, anger and fatigue. In Germany, a new word has been created for this: "mütend", a combination of “müde” (tired) and “wütend” (angry). Tired in view of the never-ending COVID-19 pandemic and angry because of the measures, which are not always comprehensible and in some countries unproductive.

I want to give voice to optimism today. Optimism has many advantages. It gives us strength and can sometimes give us wings. Our school song ("Spread your Wings") would be worthless without optimism. Without optimism, our objectives would blur before our eyes or we would not even see reason to have any. Who would start a project, found a start-up, enter into a friendship or even marry? Without optimism, no inventor would ever have pursued the vision that humans would one day fly in machines. Would we even believe in our mission statement ("We provide a home of educational excellence within a vibrant, creative and caring community") without optimism? Optimism is confidence and confidence is what we need to believe in the values of society and our school. I do not mean blind confidence and illusionary optimism, but a moderate optimism that always first looks at the good in the challenges of humanity. Optimists are strong because positive thoughts give mental and even physical strength. And optimism is certainly also more conducive to kindness, humour and a happy expression.

I would consider myself an optimistic realist.I think we should see things as they are, but also see them as improvable and changeable. I therefore see our mission statement as realistically optimistic in character, since they point to a shapeable future on the basis of scientifically founded school education and training. The vision to "positively impact the lives of others'', as well as the vision of inspiring and encouraging our students to "explore their interests and passion for learning", spring from optimistic roots that should develop their fruits and bear them in the future.

In this sense, I also realistically and optimistically, without wanting to gloss over reality, hope for a successful, fruitful and optimism-deserving last phase of this school year 2020/21.

I wish you a good weekend

From Head of Stream

Dear Parents

The past two weeks, when we were able to resume morning classes in Pok Fu Lam and in our Secondary Department, were a great step towards normal school life. Now we are looking forward to all Primary students returning to campus on Monday.

Motto Week

Our K12 students start their last week of regular school life on Monday, traditionally "Mottowoche", filled with unusual outfits and activities. It is nice that this week does not have to take place online and we wish our Abitur students wonderful days before their final oral exams.

Child Protection/Safeguarding

We will shortly be displaying new Child Protection/Safeguarding posters in all school buildings. Our School Counsellors Mrs Dellinger and Mrs Neumann-Hillebrand will be talking to our students about child protection in the coming weeks. I would also like to encourage you as parents to contact one of our child protection officers if you have concerns about your own or other children in our school community.

Returning GSIS School devices

Primary Corner

Dear Parents

In the past two weeks I had a chance to talk to different students. They felt lucky to be back at school even though the regulations are strict. Many of the students told me that they have seen our slides and the parents guided them through the importance.

Thank you very much that you supported the students with this challenging task.

From my side I can say that all the students try to do their best and keep their mask up correctly and being physically distanced - for some kids this is not so easy and therefore also huge applause to them!

Dear Parents

Below please find our news and events of the past week:

Fasttrack Programme: Students received their A1 language diploma

The Fasttrack students of K06AB took the level A1 language exam  at the beginning of March. In an exam lasting about an hour, they had to complete reading and listening comprehension tasks and write a text in German. The examination closed with an oral exam.

On Thursday, the students received the reward for all their efforts: All twelve Fasttrack students passed the exam with excellent or good results and were very proud to receive their internationally recognised language diploma from Mr Weghoff.  Two students achieved the maximum score (100 points).

Congratulations to all students of the Fasttrack Programme!

KPR-Meeting on 20/04/2021

On Tuesday, the second KPR meeting of this school year took place, where parent representatives and school management exchanged views on topics such as online learning, the Fasttrack programme, etc. We will discuss your feedback and suggestions on these topics with staff at the next opportunity. In the past months, we have experienced a very constructive cooperation with the KPRs and the parents, for which we would like to thank you very much.

Farewell and Thanks

We would like to express our special thanks to the KPR Secretary of the German Secondary Department, Mrs Annette Berg, who has worked tirelessly and with great commitment for the good of the school community over the past four years. She has not only looked after the interests of the parents and students of the German Secondary Department, but has also contributed significantly to the success of numerous school events. We thank her for the excellent cooperation and wish her and her family all the best for their life in Germany.

Returning GSIS School devices

Primary Corner

Dear Parents,

Monday will be an exciting day for us, with all of our EPD students returning full time for the first time since Term 1!  Our schedule at the Peak will remain 7:35-1:15 for all students, Y02-Y06. Our students are doing a fantastic job with their arrival/dismissal routine, maintaining safety during snack time, washing of hands and use of hand sanitiser, and LEARNING! Thank you parents for reviewing the information slides with your children prior to the resumption, this has really helped with a smooth transition.

Enjoy the fantastic weather this weekend.
