Dear Members of the School Community
In the past two weeks we have been newly startled by a super-spreader outbreak in a fitness centre that also had an impact on our school decisions. Although we are all feeling an understandable COVID-19 fatigue, we must at any time keep up our efforts to make a decision that is as uninfluenced and objective as possible in each case. Since you have been and will be informed of our decisions and departmental specifics, I will turn to another topic in this week’s Gazette.
In the past two academic years, one of our main focuses was to further develop the German International Stream of GSIS by continuously opening it up to the international community. This process was initiated by German Schools Abroad many years ago with the introduction of the German International Abitur, which aimed at opening the schools to a wider circle of interested parties through the introduction of bilingualism, and adapting them to today's globally oriented educational needs.
At GSIS, we introduced the bilingual Kindergarten in the 2019/20 school year as an opportunity for German-speaking as well as non-German-speaking children to join the German International Stream. In the bilingual Kindergarten, the children are taught bilingually in German/English or German/Mandarin in a joint immersion programme (one teacher – one language). This approach is continued in the German Preschool (DVOR), where the German-language proportion is increased from 50% to 75%. Here, too, children are admitted both with and without German language skills.
In the Secondary Department of the German International Stream, with the Fast Track Programme we introduced a lateral entry programme for non-German speaking students in grade 6 this school year. These 12 students have already reached level A1 of the European Framework of Reference and have proven their successful participation in the Fast Track Programme despite the special circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and predominantly learning online.
In addition to the above measures, in the next academic year 2021/22 we will also offer non-German-speaking students lateral entry in the Primary Department of the German International Stream. Due to the special conditions of the Primary school, we will limit the number of non-German speaking lateral entrants in classes 1 to 4 to a maximum of 12 children or a maximum of 2 non-German speaking children per class. The new programme will be called "CLIPPY", which stands for "Cultural and Language Integration Program Primary Years".
Admission to the CLIPPY programme requires that children have already acquired literacy in English and can demonstrate at least an age-appropriate proficiency in English. In addition, good performance is expected in all school subjects, but especially in English and Mathematics. These subjects, as well as soft skills such as perseverance and focus, are determined in an entrance test during the admission procedure.
The aim of the programme is to develop German language skills in such a way that participation in regular classes with German as a Foreign/Second Language (DaF/DaZ) support is possible after one school year at the latest.
The programme works in the form of a hybrid model in which the students are taught partly in DaF/DaZ lessons and partly in class and are increasingly integrated depending on their individual linguistic development. An additional teacher was hired for the DaF lessons, who can offer further support in the DaF/DaZ area to students with an increased need for German.
After one year, the students are fully integrated into the regular class.
All non-German-speaking students who are admitted to the bilingual Kindergarten, the CLIPPY programme or the Fasttrack programme receive intensive German language support which helps them to integrate into the German International Stream and follow their path even to the German International Abitur.

Dear Parents and Students
What a roller-coaster week! I am sure that you are as excited as I am about the resumption on-campus from next Monday.
Following on the good news of our two ‘close contact’ students, I’d like to inform you that our two teachers have also been tested negative by CHP. We hope our students and teachers complete their quarantine quickly and join us back at school soon.
While our students have been online learning this week, we have taken the opportunity to deeply disinfect our two campuses. We are also pleased to share that we have completed disinfection fogging for both PFL campus and Upper Building. We hope to bring you peace of mind that a clean and safe environment is prepared for students and staff’s return.
We need each one of your collaboration to protect GSIS community. In addition to strict compliance to CHP’s guidelines, once again I’d like to remind you to inform your Department Nurse should the student being identified as a ‘confirmed case’, ‘preliminary positive’ or ‘close contact’. Here is the campus protocol should you need it again. Any students or staff who have been ordered for Mandatory Testing by HK government will not be able to return to the campus until the test is done and negative.

News from the Board
Community Committee
For much of the community it has been a difficult and stressful week. Many members of the community have had to undergo testing and even quarantining based on where they live, work or places that they may have visited. As a community it is important that we support each other and look after those who need it the most. As such we would like to offer our help in whatever way may be needed to support staff, students and families through these difficult times.
In case you find yourself or a loved one in the situation of being a close contact and sent to a quarantine centre we have attached a list of items that you may wish to pack to make your time in quarantine a bit easier. In addition, we appreciate it is often difficult to get all the items you need and will be offering a delivery service once a week (Wednesdays) to ensure that necessities and care packages can be received by those who need them. Please feel free to contact us at any time should you or your family need any help.
For deliveries:
- Seek approval from quarantine centre for acceptance of delivery items with photographs (need 24 hours- so by Monday ideally)
- Contact the Community Committee and notify us of items and address to be sent to
- We will aim to deliver all approved items on Wednesdays
For any emergency items outside this timeframe we will do our best to help but do note that the quarantine centres will need to approve all items in advance.

The unexpected switch to online lessons this week went smoothly, and we hope you have been able to cope with the situation.
Hong Kong Government’s announcement to include teachers and school staff in the vaccination priority list was welcomed by all kindergarten staff. As a result, some of our staff members have already received their first vaccination.
We have used the online week to carry out our Pok Fu Lam campus’s professional disinfection to be well prepared for the return of our children on Monday.
The schedule for face-to-face lessons for the coming week was emailed to you yesterday. Please note the changes, and we are looking forward to having the children back in school to enjoy the upcoming Easter activities together. We will share these activities in the next issue of the Gazette.

Heureka competition

How do cucumbers grow? What is the meaning of "www" in the context of the Internet? What device can a doctor use to listen to your heart sounds? Would you have known?
These are 3 of 45 questions that the students had to answer in the competition.
Both K04 classes from German Primary successfully participated in the annual Humans and Nature competition HEUREKA last November and received their certificates and prizes last week. Congratulations to Casey Decker, Frieda Naber, Mathea Langer and Jakob Schmidt-Ramirez, they were honored with a special prize for being the top four in K04.
The HEUREKA competition ("heureka" comes from Greek and means "I (found) it!") is a multiple choice quiz for students in grades 3 to 8, with questions on science topics such as animals, plants, humans and their environment, weather, chemical and physical phenomena, technology, energy and progress.
Successfully answering the sometimes difficult questions requires not only a broad general knowledge, but also a good understanding of the context and the ability to combine and rule out possible answers logically.
A total of 32,637 children from a wide range of German states and international German schools took part. 6058 of these students are from the 4th grade.

From Head of Stream

Dear Parents
Following a frustrating week back to online learning we are very much looking forward to opening school next week. I was pleased to have my first vaccination yesterday and look forward to possible future benefits regarding potential travel in the summer. My mother, who I have not seen for over a year, was 89 years old last weekend. We had a celebration as best we could over zoom but it was not quite what we wanted. She is in good spirits despite not having left her house for nearly a year other than brief walks outside. It brought to mind that all of us have a myriad of personal stories and challenges that we are navigating during this time. Just being kind to each other should not be overrated.
Student Leadership
Head Student elections & Prefect nominations
The election and nomination process for these key secondary student leadership roles were launched this week. Students will self-nominate in teams of two, create a one-minute hustings video and then it goes to the student vote. Exciting stuff! Thanks to our Trust Teachers, Herr Summe and Ms McCarrick for overseeing this process.
I would like to thank the four outgoing students who have really made a difference this year by advocating for and realising a number of initiatives that benefit the student body. Thank you to Jenna Hong, Sienna Martin, Mehak Sheethal Kumar and Jonas Hahn, it has been great working with you.
Earlier this week senior students submitted their application to be a Prefect. As is our tradition, the secondary staff will now review all these and select their nominations. Thank you to Ms Booth, Head of Year 12 & 13, for overseeing this process.
Academic Societies
This week I invited our Year 12 students to form new Academic Societies for this year. This is an opportunity for IBDP students to explore a particular subject area beyond the curriculum and to share their passion with other students through organising in-school seminars, visiting speakers, social experiments, debates and quizzes as well as an Action Week later in the year. I am very much looking forward to receiving the proposals.
Transition from EPD to ESD
We are starting to plan the transition process from EPD to ESD. I know that many in Year 6 are excited to cross Guildford Road to begin Year 7 and many are starting to ask questions about what might be different. Curriculum Leaders in EPD will be meeting with their counterparts in the ESD after the Easter break to review the academic transitions and the Year 6 teachers are gathering the tracking and progression data to share with Subject Leaders so that the transition to secondary school is as smooth as possible. Jessica McCarroll is our Head of Year 7 and Year 6 Transition so these students will start to see more of her next term as we plan some visits to secondary classes (hopefully not via zoom!).
Student Voice
I have spent the week focused on one of my favourite aspects of this profession, talking with students about enriching their experience of school following the survey on Online Learning & Student Wellbeing. The Class Representatives identified some key areas for improvement and will now discuss the results with their peers. We will meet again after the Spring Break to review suggestions.
KPR Meetings
And finally, a big thank you to all the KPR Secretaries who have arranged class meetings and gathered information in preparation for next week’s EPD meeting. It has been a particularly challenging year to be a KPR Secretary and I would like to pass on my gratitude to everyone who has volunteered for this role. I look forward to the Kindergarten and Secondary meetings next term.

Communications
Please, if you have questions for a class teacher, specialist teacher, bus coordinator, ECA coordinator, HOD/DHoD, etc. go directly to that person with your question or concern. While we are happy to hear the concerns raised and to discuss them in the KPR meetings, we are seeing a shift of individuals not addressing concerns directly with the appropriate staff member. We have 97 items on our KPR Topics list, many of which could be addressed by a conversation or email. Some of the issues which could be handled more quickly and directly:
- The audio quality of a video provided by a teacher
- The bus missing a stop
- A parent would like some optional activities provided online
- A parent would like for the optional activities to not be provided online
- What is Emergency Care
- My child did not receive an invitation to a class and missed it
- My child’s work was not marked. If the work is not going to be marked could the answers be sent directly to the parents?
- Please provide the answers to the problems given in xxxxxx.
- Question regarding language assignments, books, or assessments.
Our KPRs have done a tremendous job holding coffee mornings and collating information. Please use them as a system for a class-wide, department-wide, or school-wide issue. Specific questions can be addressed in a more timely manner by following the GSIS communication flow chart.
As always, we will compile answers to all KPR Topics presented and share the draft with the class KPRs. The answers will come from class teachers, specialists, HoD/DHoD and members of the SMT. During the KPR meeting, we discuss responses to department or school-wide issues and update information in the KPR Topics list. A copy of these responses will be provided to you by your class KPR along with the minutes of the meeting. If you believe a topic was not answered either during this meeting or past meetings, please contact me directly at kcunningham@gsis.edu.hk, and I will be happy to assist you.
