Dear Parents

We welcomed our Year 13 graduates back to school this week to prepare for their Graduation that will take place next week. It will be a somewhat scaled-down event as we can only have fifty people in the IB Hall at a time but we are very pleased to be able to invite students into school for a meaningful ceremony. We will separate the Class of 2020 into four groups so that we meet the health requirements and the event will be streamed for family and friends.

As part of the graduation ceremony, we will also present Deutsche Sprachdiplom II certificates to seven students; this qualification confirms that these students have achieved sufficient fluency in the German language to be able to attend higher education institutions in Germany. We will also be presenting three other awards that have significance for the German Swiss community.

Petra Steinwehe Plate
Petra Steinwehe was a GSIS student who was passionate about Drama and the Theatre. She sadly passed away before her time and this award was created in her memory. The award is not given every year, it is only given when a student or students have shown exceptional commitment to Drama or Performance at GSIS and have excelled in this field.

Joel Dunn Award
This is the major award for the GSIS sporting year and is awarded to the student who has contributed to GSIS sport over a long period of time. It is named after Joel Dunn, a sports and mathematics teacher at school who passed away following an illness. The recipient of this award will have been involved in more than one sport and actively contributed to coaching, refereeing, captaincy as well as playing.

Malcolm Macaffer Award
This award is given in memory of Malcolm Macaffer who taught English at GSIS from 1989-1999 and founded the GSIS Debate Society. To receive the award, a student will have demonstrated a strong commitment to debate and, equally, possess superb written and oral communication skills in the English language.

We look forward to welcoming our Class of 2020 Graduates to school next Wednesday afternoon to mark their formal end to school life. The event will be streamed for family and friends.
