GSIS Gazette – Issue #104

15th September 2023

Principal's Column

Dear Parents,

Two weeks have passed since the last edition of the Gazette, and the events in this short time could last half a year. Two Fridays and yesterday have resulted in a weather-related school closure – a very unusual start to the new school year.

A typhoon, floods and school closures

I hope you and your families have weathered the force of Super Typhoon Saola and the heaviest rainfalls in 140 years. Families and staff who only just moved to Hong Kong had to endure a rare ordeal immediately. After these disruptive events, they have really arrived in Hong Kong.

Despite the storms, we could continue school operations seamlessly on the following schooldays. A lot of flexibility on the part of each individual and the collective efforts of many people made this possible. First and foremost, our Facilities Team. They worked around the clock to repair damage and watermarks. Many of our staff spent their weekends planning alternative bus routes, organising additional chaperones on Monday mornings, updating information to staff and parents and working on "what if scenarios". I want to thank all staff for their prompt and selfless support and you, dear parents, for your patience. I hope we will be spared from further natural disasters for the rest of the school year and that we can look forward to a sunny autumn.

Bund-Länder-Inspektion

Preparations for the BLI 3.0 are well advanced. Our German Primary and Secondary Department colleagues completed the documents thanks to excellent teamwork. When we submit them to the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) on time, we will have concluded an essential part of achieving this important accreditation. Another component is the online survey you have diligently participated in. Your answers provide crucial feedback, and we look forward to receiving further replies. The link sent to you is active until Monday, 18 September.

Parent Involvement at GSIS

Almost all classes elected their Parent Representatives (KPRs) for this school year. I look forward to welcoming the KPRs at the Peak for the election of the KPR Department Secretaries on Tuesday, 26 September, at 6:00 pm. We want to take this opportunity to introduce our school's new Strategic Plan 2023-2028. Likewise, the new Parents' Organisation for Community (POC) committee would like to introduce themselves (pocvolunteers@learning.gsis.edu.hk) and inform you about the POC's event plans. One of the traditional community highlights of the school year is approaching fast - our GSIS Christmas Bazaar. You can and should contribute to making it another unforgettable experience. On 26 September, the POC Chairperson, Catherine Chan, will present many options for you to step up and volunteer. I would like to ask all KPRs to make a note of this date. You will receive a separate invitation shortly.

I wish you a relaxing weekend.

Update from the Boards

Seeing everyone back on campus, refreshed and excited to embark on new learning adventures, is fantastic. We are happy to inform you that over the summer, the Operations Team has been hard at work completing numerous campus upgrades to enhance our students and staff's learning and working environment. Even with the disruptions caused by the Typhoon and Black Rainstorm, teaching and learning continue earnestly.

Hosting the new Swiss Consul General, Mr. Daniel Freihofer, and Ms. Stefanie Seedig, the German Deputy Consul, was an honour. We engaged in stimulating discussions on bolstering Swissness and enhancing the Swiss cultural aspects within GSIS and will share more details with you soon.

We are sorry to announce Mr. Benno Jaeggi’s resignation from the Board and thank him for his dedicated service to GSIS.  Moreover, we are pleased to introduce Ms. Wanyi Yao as our new Treasurer. Wanyi has remarkable financial acumen, and her expertise will ensure sound fiscal stewardship. Mr. Andy Cheung will also join the Finance Committee.

Mr. Tobias Heller has been appointed to the Management Committee. Tobias brings a wealth of corporate experience, and we look forward to his valuable contributions in the future.

Let's Get Physical Student Organization

This summer, some of our students (Alexis and Austin Lee) travelled to Cambodia, representing Let's Get Physical - a student-led organization founded by Alexis that aims to provide sports opportunities to underprivileged children around Hong Kong and Asia. There, they donated the clothes, shoes and equipment collected this past June from students in GSIS and other schools and organisations in Hong Kong to the children, played fun sports games with them and taught them how to use the unfamiliar equipment. It was so heartwarming to see the number of smiles we put on people's faces 🙂

Thank you to everyone who donated something and for helping us help them. To learn more about this initiative, please visit their website.

Welcome back to School!

We hope you had a fantastic summer break with a lot of relaxation and fun and that you enjoy the new school year. At the beginning of the new school year, setting up a routine to put our well-being first is important. Here are a few tips for finding your rhythm and a healthy routine after the long summer holidays:

1. Have a set sleeping pattern to be well-rested and ready to tackle your day.
2. Set targets and work out a plan. It helps to reduce stress when separating your tasks into smaller tasks.
3. Take care of yourself. Take enough time for activities which can bring joy and relaxation to recharge your batteries and keep a positive outlook.
4. Talk to other students, parents and teachers. Building close relationships within the school community for a supportive and integrated environment is important.

It is very normal that you experience a mix of excitement and nervousness in the beginning. Maybe you feel a bit more relaxed already. If you have any questions, please contact us.
