Dear School Community
It is incredible how quickly a school year comes to an end.
The academic achievements at GSIS were once again remarkable this year. First and foremost, I would like to thank all the students for their personal learning achievements as independent learners. Furthermore, I would like to thank the teachers for their excellent role as learning facilitators, which enabled each student to achieve the best possible learning success. All of this was only possible with the support of the Administration Team, which provided the best conditions for the Faculty Teams.
I wish the students, supportive parents, and teachers wonderful relaxation and plenty of new experiences during the upcoming summer break.
With this newsletter, I say goodbye to GSIS after only two years. I will remember GSIS for a long time and take many constructive experiences to my new workplace with me. I wish you all the best for the future, especially the incredible students.
With best regards
Dr Dirk Bennhardt Principal |
“Every meeting led to a parting, and so it would, as long as life was mortal. In every meeting, there was some of the sorrow of parting, but in everything parting, there was some of the joy of meeting as well.”― Cassandra Clare
International schools, by their nature, are transient. Partings and goodbyes, sometimes for good, are inevitable. In the book “Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing up Among Worlds,” Ruth Van Reken and David Pollock suggest parents help their children obtain a healthy sense of closure by using a strategy with the acronym RAFT. RAFT stands for reconciliation, affirmation, farewell, and think destination. The image and analogy of building a raft together also help children and adults alike to think about taking steps that will help them set sail for the next phase.
Reconciliation - The mental baggage of interpersonal difficulties can follow you to your next destination. Ask for forgiveness. Forgive. Try to resolve any lingering conflicts. If that’s not possible, do your part to let things go.
Affirmation - What did you appreciate about your experience? Who helped you grow? Who made your life better, easier, and more enjoyable? Identify the people, places, and things that were special. Say thank you and show gratitude for them.
Farewell - Choose a way to say goodbye. This can be done by writing a note, taking a picture, planning a special playdate or celebration, doing a favourite activity together, giving a gift, or making something like a drawing or a scrapbook.
Think Destination - Research your next destination. Look into what resources and supports are available. Contact other families that can pass on advice for the transition. Get excited about the new adventures ahead, and hold space for the sadness accompanying leaving and loss.
As you set sail for summer and your next destination, we wish you courage and kindness on the journey.

When we first took up the mantle in June 2022, we were terrified of speaking to senior management and finding out that our ideas would be unrealistic or disappointing the student body with yet another year of seemingly nothing getting done. That’s why we are immensely grateful to the SMT (Herr Dr. Bennhardt, Frau Cichon, and Mr. Misso-Veness) and our Trust Teachers (Ms. McCarrick and Herr Summe) for collaborating closely with us to create a better learning environment. Not to mention the insightful contributions of the class SVs from the ESD and GSD alike, who showed genuine passion and creativity in helping solve the issues of the school.
One of our first steps this year to foster a better learning environment was the complete revamp of the Student Life Website. Building upon the foundation made by previous Head Students, we consolidated all important school-related information into one site for students to easily access and added various new pages such as Societies, Student Initiatives, Helpful Links and Sports. It was a great success, receiving much positive feedback and support from students and teachers alike.
Furthermore, we raised a record-breaking HK$10,000 during our Christmas Candy Cane sale, far exceeding that of previous years, with all proceeds going towards a charity of students’ choice (Pathfinders Limited). Finally, we organised the first-ever Teacher’s Appreciation Week towards the end of the year to highlight and celebrate the hard work put in by the GSIS staff, including various teacher-vs-student events and handwritten messages of appreciation sent in by students.
With all public exams officially ending, we created an IGCSE/IB second-hand resource system to provide current Y9-11 students with a cheaper and more convenient option for acquiring these resources, connecting them with Y11-Y13 sellers. Students can access these using their @learning.gsis.edu.hk account on the Student Life Website homepage or Links page.
Our other achievements this term include various well-being events to boost student morale, several Dress-Up Days to encourage school spirit and more SV (class representative) meetings to amplify students' voices. We’re proud to pass the torch to next year’s Head Students!

We are one school - under this keyword, I would like to initiate a joint art project involving all students and colleagues of GSIS. And now, the time has come, and the preparations for such a project have been completed. I would like to thank Mats Rauhut (former K12), Elisa Duong (K10), Leander Georges (K11), Monika Tavernier, Dr. Dirk Bennhardt and Andrew Hull for their intensive support in developing the idea.
COMING TOGETHER TO BUILD A SCULPTURE
I invite all of you (students, teachers and all GSIS staff) to join this art project. All you have to do is bring a found or self-made souvenir from your vacation to school after the holidays and lend it to us for the time of the art display (please see details below). We look forward to your cooperation!

As we come to the end of another school year, we reflect on the many successes and achievements that our students have accomplished. It has been some time since we have been able to learn without Covid-related restrictions and setbacks, and it is evident that our students have thrived as a result. Our small group of high school graduates achieved excellent results, which is impressive evidence of the success of this academic year.
This time of year marks the departure of our teachers and students who will leave our school to embark on new journeys. They have made an indelible impression on us, and we will miss them greatly in the coming year. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours and hope that they find fulfilment and success in their new adventures.
During our end-of-year celebration, we said farewell to several colleagues from the German International Stream, who will either embark on a new professional challenge or enjoy a well-deserved retirement. I extend my heartfelt thanks to them for their many years of dedication and contribution to the success of our students.

The departing Head of the German Primary, Priska Erni, has significantly impacted the department in recent years. All have felt her passion and dedication to working with children and teaching staff, as well as her daily contributions to the school's development. I would like to thank Priska from the bottom of my heart for her outstanding work and wish her all the best for the future.
I also thank our Principal, Dr. Dirk Bennhardt, for his close and trusting cooperation over the past two years. His unwavering commitment and dedication to the well-being of our students have been focused on developing our school as a centre of learning, support, and personal development. I wish Dr. Bennhardt and his wife all the best, a good start, and many successful years in Dortmund.
As we prepare for a long recovery phase, I hope you enjoy a well-deserved summer break and time with family and friends. May this summer bring you joy, peace, and many unforgettable experiences before we see each other again in the new school year.

We have made it to the end of another fantastic school year, and, despite a minor setback last week with the brief flooding closure, we have had a whole year in school! This is certainly something to celebrate! It has been a joy to see the children growing and learning alongside their friends, which has been a new experience for many of our younger children who have had most of their school life online until now. We have seen a vast improvement in their social skills, and they have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm for learning. It is a privilege to work with such wonderful students.
This year has also provided more opportunities to welcome parents back into school, and we hope you have enjoyed joining the many celebrations over the year. We look forward to holding more events for parents in the coming year and welcoming you and your children back to school in August. Have a relaxing summer break with your families. We will see your children for their first day of school.

Before we all say goodbye for the summer holidays, we want to briefly reflect on the school year 2022/23 and provide you with some information for the upcoming school year 2023/2024.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on Hong Kong, we are happy that we could organise some exciting events in the past school year.
These include the Christmas and Spring concerts, Tower blowing, Christmas Bazaar, Ballad afternoon (K07A/B), excursions to the mosque, monastery and museums, competitions such as Youth Debates, Diercke Geography, Mathematics Olympiad, project, and hiking days, K10 internships, and a reduced Discovery Week. Another highlight of the year was the event on 3 October 2022, the anniversary of the German reunification, also attended by the Deputy Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Bredohl.
The last restrictions were removed in the second part of the school year, and teaching could be carried out under "normal" conditions in all year groups. The exams for the German International Abitur (DIA) as well as for the "Mittleren Schulabschluss (MSA)" were successfully completed. We commend our students on their perseverance and performance throughout the school year! Our students are highly committed and motivated in many areas, even outside class. Their above-average willingness to perform is reflected in their academic achievements.
Our graduates of the graduating class of 2023 achieved a particularly remarkable result with an average grade of 1.78. Three of four students achieved a grade of 1 before the comma. We wish them all the best for their future. I also want to take this opportunity, on behalf of my colleagues, to thank you for your understanding and support. A special thanks to our dear parents for your trust and engagement in school life. I also thank my colleagues for their tireless and dedicated work this school year. Dr. Bennhardt, Mr. Gresch, Mr. Hahn, Ms. Jaeschke, Mr. Kronbach and Ms. Zhang. We wish them all the best for their future.
But where there is a farewell, there is also a welcome of new colleagues to German Secondary. So, we welcome:
• Ms. Michelle Hofer - Ethics/English
• Ms. Flavia Homburg - Latin/English
• Ms. Melanie Li - Mandarin/German as a Second Language (DAF)
• Ms. Anja Oertel – Learning Support teacher
• Mr. Mariwan Mohammed - Geography/Mathematics/English
• Mr. Florian Rewerski - German/Sports
• Ms. Joanne O'Sullivan - English (maternity leave replacement, August to December 2023)
We wish all new colleagues a smooth start at the German Swiss International School and look forward to working together.

I can’t quite believe we have reached the end of the school year! Students and staff have worked so hard over the past eleven months and deserve a rest. As I visited the Pok Fu Lam classrooms on Monday, it was lovely to hear about all the places Kindergarten pupils will be travelling. I look forward to seeing you all refreshed and rejuvenated after a well-deserved summer break.
I am pleased to confirm that all our overseas Discovery Week trips are now settled, and we have an exciting range of trips and activities for those students who wish to stay in Hong Kong.
In the Secondary Department, we look forward to the IB Diploma results on 6 July and the I/GCSE results in August.
Farewell to Ms. Frawley, Ms. Gillespie, Mr. Irwin, Mr. Chan-Combrink, Ms. Hayward and Ms. McLachlan. You have our enduring thanks for all that you have contributed to the school and our very best wishes for all your future plans.
And to those families leaving us, we hope your move from Hong Kong goes smoothly and that you settle well in your new home. Please do keep in touch!
