GSIS Gazette – Issue #2

6th September 2019

Principal's Column

I hope you all enjoyed reading our first issue last week and I would like to thank our Marketing and Communications Team for producing an interesting and informative newsletter.  We have received very positive feedback from many of you, thank you.

I hope both you and your children have all settled into the new term, particularly if you are new to the school. It was a busy week last week for staff and students.  As I walked around both campuses, I was struck by just how welcoming and inclusive our community is. Students are challenged to develop their own talents while encouraging others to do the same. In all year groups and both streams, our students are encouraged to be academically aspirational and we are proud to offer support and enrichment opportunities to complement their studies.

As you know, this week marked the start of our preferred bus departure which I am happy to report worked very well. However, there were still a couple of drivers who did not comply and so please do remind them of  where they should wait until your child is released from school.

Finally, I have attached a letter from the Education Bureau which has been sent to all parents of schools in Hong Kong.  It focuses on two topics which GSIS is proud to also be committed to:

  • Fostering respect, care and harmony
  • Home school cooperation

I am sure that you will thoroughly enjoy this week’s Gazette.

The Like Movie

LIKE is an IndieFlix Original documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to inspire us to self-regulate. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care … but is that what's really happening?

This movie was filmed in Hong Kong using students from other international schools, so the content is extremely relevant for students and parents in the GSIS community.

Parents@GSIS will host a free screening of The Like Movie on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30pm in the IB Hall. Click on the link below to watch the trailer.

German-speaking Volunteers

Dear Parents

I am writing to ask for your help in supporting the German language programme in the English International Stream. At the end of the last school year we trialled sessions in which a small group of German speaking parents were available for Y09 and Y10 students to practice their German speaking skills with during lesson times. Although everyone was a bit hesitant at first the students very soon warmed up and began to become more confident and natural in their German speaking. The feedback from the students and parents who participated was very positive with everyone enjoying the opportunity to speak more German. We are currently looking at volunteers for this school year. It is a fantastic way that we can work across the streams to the benefit of the students and strengthening the German language within the school.

Please note

  • There is no commitment to take part each week and the more volunteers we have the more we can share the sessions out
  • Speaking sessions are based on asking students questions on various topics and listening to their responses and letting them know whether their answers make sense (no actual teaching is required)

Green News: No Cup, No Drink!

From Monday, 16 September there will no longer be any disposable cups available for hot or cold drinks in the Three Mackerels Cafe.  There have been no paper cups in the cafeteria for the best part of last year and this has been working well, we will now be removing plastic cups as well. Alternatives are available and will be on sale during lunch times on Green Mondays but students, staff and visitors to the school are reminder to bring their own non-disposable alternatives.  This move is in line with the school’s actions towards a greener and more sustainable learning environment for our students. Dear Parents

In the first issue of the Gazette the new German Secondary teachers introduced themselves. Today I would also like to welcome our intern Miriam Mühlhaus. She returned to GSIS for an internship semester, where she spent the first years of her primary education.

Currently many of our students are addressing the Fall of the Berlin Wall. We are working on different projects and events to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Starting this week, the exhibition "Von der Friedlichen Revolution zur deutschen Einheit" (From Peaceful Revolution to German Unity) of the Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur (Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship) can be viewed in both German and English. Secondary students can inform themselves about the events surrounding the Fall of the Wall during break times and free lessons as well as during class. Furthermore, related student artwork is also on display in the library.

The first Parents' evenings in the German Secondary Department took place already, and I am looking forward to welcoming the parents of K10 next Tuesday at 6 pm.

From Head of English International Stream

Simon Misso-Veness

Dear Parents

It was lovely to see many of you at the Back to School social evening a couple of weeks ago. Establishing open, respectful and trusting relationships with our parents is an important feature of a building and sustaining a strong school community.

Thank you to all parents who attended the KPR meetings this week, and plan to do so next week, particularly those individuals who will take on the role of class representative. This is a much-valued position at this school as these parents provide an important line of communication and discourse. I look forward to meeting everyone at our regular meetings held across the year.

Over the past two weeks we have been steadily introducing our staggered departures at The Peak. Primary department students and teachers have been doing a terrific job since the start of the year and the secondary departments joined the process this week. We hope this system leads to a much smoother departure. However, whilst on duty at this time I was amazed to learn just how many students receive lunches that are individually delivered by parents, drivers and/or helpers. Many of these meals are delivered especially by car: one packed lunch, one return car journey. This is clearly not friendly to the environment and also serves to add to the congestion in Guildford Road that we are trying to relieve. Please do consider alternative ways to feed your children, either by taking advantage of the school cafeteria or taking a packed lunch to school. Just because we can does not always mean we should.

The school is successfully moving a number of its operations and data systems online, which should streamline a number of procedures. As part of this process please review the medical information we have for your child through the Veracross portal. Whenever we take students on trips or visits this medical information represents an essential part of our risk assessments so it is vital that the information is updated and relevant. Here is a video that explains this process:

Finally, a few words about how we communicate with each other. Please consider carefully what and even who you write about on WhatsApp. Whilst this is a valuable platform for sharing information and discussing ideas it should not be used to spread gossip or to defame or embarrass another person or group. We have clear policies in school to help students manage their digital responsibilities and we should all serve as role models; please ensure that we remain a respectful and civil online community by challenging or reporting any comments that you think are inappropriate. Occasional disagreement is understandable but direct or indirect insults to individuals are completely unjustifiable and entirely unacceptable within a school community. If you would not say it directly to the person concerned, just don’t say it.
