The finals of the MATE ROV (Remote-Operated Vehicle) competition took place in Tacoma, Washington State, USA last week and the GSIS team of Audrey (Y11), Arushee, Jeffrey and Captain Jinoo (all Y12) flew out to test their self-built ROV against the best high-school constructors from the Americas, Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Asia. The ROV performed beautifully and the team functioned as a well-drilled squad. They were unable to match the top schools so they concentrated on their secondary goal: to return as top-ranked ROV team in Hong Kong. This was not an easy target as it involved beating the mighty CMA Secondary School but, after the "product demonstrations", the score was: CMA 155, GSIS 160!

GSIS can also take pride in the fact that our former Deputy Principal, Dr Prinz, transferred the mentoring skills he learned with us to his new school in Germany and, after much hard work, his new team also qualified for the Finals (though they were no match for our, more seasoned, team!)

Huge congratulations are due to Jeff, Arushee and Audrey and especially to Jinoo who demonstrated inspiring leadership throughout the last two years.

Many thanks also to Ms Lau for her millennial IT skills and cool head under pressure, especially when rescuing the team from the ignominy of failure due, not to honourable engineering deficiencies, but to forgotten paperwork.
