GSIS to Host East Asian Games of German Schools Abroad in 2017

Numerous studies in recent years show that those who practise sport train not only their bodies, but also their minds. Physical Education is integrated in the GSIS curriculum, with a total of 27 extracurricular PE activities being taught in the Secondary Department alone.

Just as sport helps our students to connect with each other and develop their team spirit, it also brings together the German Schools Abroad of the region once every two years. We are thus especially pleased to announce that the German Swiss International School will host the fifth East Asian Games this year from 13-18 November.

There will be a total of seven German Schools Abroad, including GSIS, participating, with schools from China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea each sending a team of 20 students to compete in gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, basketball, football and athletics.

This event has been held at various locations since 2009. It encourages students to get to know each other, it stimulates the team spirit and togetherness of students of different ages and, all in all, reinforces exchange between the German Schools Abroad.

Such a cross-border sports event is an excellent opportunity for our school to present itself to the outside world as a strong and welcoming school community. We are counting on your practical and active support, especially with regard to accommodating the visiting students, who customarily stay with local host families. The East Asian Games organising team, led by Ms Grit Cichon in collaboration with Mr Martin Durner and Mr Julian Lewis, will contact you directly in the next few months and update you accordingly.

GSIS students did extremely well in Tokyo in 2013 and Beijing in 2015, taking third place at each event. In November 2017 we will be on home ground and hope to improve our results even more. Preparations in the various sports disciplines are already in full swing.

Together with you, we are looking forward to the fifth East Asian Games in Hong Kong and would like to thank you in advance for your commitment and support.

Yours in Sport
